Philadelphia: Bloody bodies of peasants cover the streets. SOA trained soldiers in military fatigues, who slaughtered the peasants minutes earlier, parade victoriously around the dead corpses. Uncle Sam, who directed the soldiers to perpetrate the massacre, has his hands covered in blood.

This was the scene in front of Philadelphia’s City Hall as hundreds who passed by in the morning rush hour of July 31, 2000 saw it. The dead bodies, soldiers and Uncle Sam were SOA Watch activists who engaged in street theater to call attention to the ongoing SOA violence/massacres perpetrated by SOA graduates in Latin America. Many of those witnessing the event were delegates of the Republican National Convention (RNC) on their way from their downtown hotels to the First Union Center, to participate in the opening of the Convention. Dozens of police, with batons in hand, surrounded the activists and arrested them.

The charges against the activists were thrown out because of selective prosecution (see the link to the judges opinion on the left side bar). Just a few month ago we learned that the District Attorney’s office had won an appeal against the dismissal of the charges. A trial date of October 2, 2001 has been set for five of the SOA Watch activists who face two to five charges.
