Roy & Linda - having just returned from several weeks in Argentina & Uruguay (Roy will also be visiting Venezuela)
- will give updates and show slides from their trip.

Bring your favorite dish, dessert, salad or anything else you would
like to share. Invite friends / bring your students.

Please RSVP: (215) 473-2162 to let us know what you will be bringing & how many will be attending.

Location: Jean Donovan CPC (6367 Overbrook Avenue, Philadelphia)

Funds raised at the April 4th event will go towards delegation* expenses. This includes the cost of printing photos taken during the trip which we will send back to the communities that we meet with during our travels to Argentina & Uruguay; they will also be used to educate and advocate for human rights in the US. Providing photos to communities has always been a very important part of our work. They not only serve as memorabilia, but are also used as organizing resources and documentation in support of social, economic, environmental and human rights. Please consider sending in a donation if you are unable to attend the April 4 event.

*The focus of the delegation will include: Meeting with human rights groups to advocate with them to lobby their governments to stop sending soldiers to be trained at the SOA/WHINSEC; meeting with government officials to request the same. Offer support and solidarity for independent media groups, and participate in strategizing with a variety of social movements for economic and social change.

In Argentina we will participate in commemoration activities, cultural events and rallies to mark the 30th anniversary (March 24) of the military coup in that country which resulted in over 30,000 people being killed and disappeared. We will meet with various groups as a follow up to the Summit of the Americas meeting that took place in Mar del Plata last November. A few other highlights include collaborating with youth involved in cultural work and circus performances, and connecting with worker movements and cooperatives. Among our initiatives will also be offering support and solidarity for the heroic work being done by torture survivor, Patricia Isasa.

Sunday, November 9 Strategy Meeting & Nonviolence Training

Please note a date change to Sunday, November 9

We ask that you register in advance for the Strategy Meeting! Call us at: 215/473-2162

Date: Sunday, Nov. 9

Location: Bryn Mawr College

Times: 9:30-12 Strategizing Session (Thomas 251)

12:00-12:30 Lunch

12:30-4:30 Nonviolence Training (Thomas Great Hall)

For directions contact Sheila Webb-Halpern at: swebbhal@brynmawr.edu

We have been getting lots of great feedback regarding the upcoming strategy meeting and the organizing committee has been hard at work pulling together your comments and suggestions in preparation.  The date and agenda changes reflect the requests and recommendations from student and local organizers.  While the strategizing meeting will serve as a preliminary focus group for a larger strategy meeting to be held in 2004, the nonviolence training is focused for people intending to make the trip down to Fort Benning this November.

The primary agenda points for the strategy session will focus on discussing the future of the SOAW movement (namely, how to launch a more effective campaign-especially with Congress, evaluating our strengths and weaknesses, and setting an agenda for early spring 2004 meeting). As a movement, we want to increase our effectiveness in closing the SOA in addition to working on related issues such as Colombia and the “War on Drugs” and the omnipresent “War on Terrorism.”

We are hoping that as many local organizers as possible can attend. If you are unavailable, we encourage you to recruit others from your region to attend this very important meeting. Please contact us as soon as possible regarding your availability so we can begin to plan for the weekend.

For more information call: 215/473-2162

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday the 9th!
